Michelle Pfeifer reunites with director Stephen Frears for this sparkling adaptation of French author Colette’s mischievous novel. Set at the height of the Belle Époque, at the turn of the 20th century, Pfeifer plays Léa, a middle-aged retired courtesan who becomes infatuated with young Fred, nicknamed Chéri. Their affair is interrupted by Fred’s mother who has arranged a marriage for him that he cannot afford not to agree to. But that’s unlikely to stop Léa. Adapted by Christopher Hampton, who also wrote ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ (1988), which Frears directed and in which Pfeifer starred, ‘Chéri’ is a sophisticated and visually dazzling treat.
