Mid90s
In Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, we follow Stevie (Sunny Suljic), as he comes of age in LA in the titular time period. Keen to be accepted both by his older brother (Lucas Hedges) and the older skater crew he latches onto, we watch as he has his initiation into rites of passage from first cigarette to first kiss.
More than a nostalgia trip, this is instead a period drama recreation of the recent past that will chime with fans of ‘Kids’ and ‘Skate Kitchen’, mixing documentary authenticity with genuine drama.
★★★★ “Funny, observant and true.” - Ian Freer, Empire
“Skaters vie for status in a directorial debut that mixes Scorsese-like extravagance with moments of smartly observed subtlety.” - Peter Bradshaw’s film of the week, The Guardian
