David Bowie’s life, his art, the legend that surrounds him and his legacy all feed into this glorious celebration of everything he was.
Artist, actor, fashion icon, sexual adventurer, cultural commentator, producer, songwriter, musician and singer, David Bowie was at the cutting edge of art and culture for four decades. Brett Morgen’s film isn’t so much a straightforward biographical documentary as it is a journey into Bowie’s world, offering up a phantasmagoric montage of imagery and music that aims to represent the artist as a unique presence within our world. The main focus is on the years between his emergence as Ziggy Stardust in the early 1970s and the groundbreaking success of his Let’s Dance tour in the mid-1980s, but the film also draws upon events before and after this period. It’s a film that will appeal to hardcore fans and Bowie neophytes alike. And it is a singular, thrilling cinematic experience.
