Royal Opera 2019⁄20 Season: Don Giovanni
Mozart’s rousing two-act opera is brought thrillingly to life by director Kasper Holten and visionary set designer Es Devlin.
Unfolding over the course of a single day, the opera tells the story of a libertine whose passionate encounters increasingly get him in trouble, including death as a result of a duel. Giovanni’s lovers warn him of his actions, but he refuses to change, eventually paying the ultimate price for his immorality.
First performed in Prague in 1787 and regarded as one of the greatest operas ever written, Don Giovanni is based on a 1630 play by Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina. Mozart’s version, with a libretto by Italian Lorenzo Da Ponte, is widely regarded as one of his finest compositions, rich in lyricism and often audacious in its creativity. Former artistic director of the Royal Opera House Holten brings a fizzing energy to the production, which is emboldened by the Devlin’s designs.
