Royal Opera 2008⁄09 Season: La traviata
Theatre and film director Richard Eyre’s stunning production of Verdi’s opera revels in the grandiloquence of the composer’s drama.
Set to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, Verdi’s popular opera was an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas fils’ 1852 play La Dame aux camélias. It was first performed in 1853 and over the next few years went through a series of iterations. Richard Eyre was previously the artistic director of the National Theatre (1987-97) and has directed a number of critically acclaimed films (Iris, Notes on a Scandal, The Children Act) as well as operas. This production is conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson and stars Kristina Mkhitaryan as Violetta, Liparit Avetisyan as Alfredo and Juan Jesús Rodríguez and Christoph Pohl as Giorgio Germont.
