The Happy Prince
In his impressively realised directorial debut, Rupert Everett plays renowned playwright Oscar Wilde. The film charts Wilde’s final years following his release from prison, as he tries to build a life in Paris and Naples. But the writer and raconteur’s reputation lies in tatters and it is left to a small group of friends to support him. But Oscar being Wilde, his appetites soon eclipse their charity and quite possibly their patience.A personal project for Everett – the actor has also played to great acclaim Wilde on stage – this is a deeply moving drama of depth and nuance, featuring an outstanding central performance. But it is also a hugely accomplished film by a first time director.
