Acclaimed actor Paul Dano (‘There Will Be Blood’) makes an assured transition to director with his acutely observed drama.
Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal are Jeanette and Jerry, a couple with a young son who are trying to make ends meet in 1950s Montana. When Jerry decides to leave town to find work. Jeanette decides that she needs to find a new life. But what to do about Joe? Told through the boy’s eyes (brilliantly played by Ed Oxenbould), Dano’s film, which based on a novel by Richard Ford, is an evocative recreation of the past and a beautiful, heart-breaking account of lost love.
