I, Anna

I, Anna

A must for all who love noirish thrillers, Barnaby Southcombe’s directorial debut features a stellar cast, headed by Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne. She plays the titular character, who may hold the key to a murder investigation being conducted by Byrne’s insomniac detective. She was definitely at the victim’s apartment on the night of his death. But Anna’s perspective on the crime makes us doubt what she recalls, let alone how she perceives everyday life.

Rampling is an old hand at the psychological mystery (watch François Ozon’s ‘Under the Sand’ or ‘Swimming Pool’) and her performance here draws us into her confused world, making us as much a detective as Byrne’s world-weary cop.

★★★★ “A classy, enigmatic thriller that shows off contemporary London at its cinematic best” - Anna Smith, Empire
