My Donkey, My Lover & I
Call My Agent star Laure Calamy is perfectly cast in this fabulously French comedy about infidelity and, well, a donkey.
Calamy plays Antoinette, a primary school teacher who happens to be having an affair with the father of one of the children. (An early scene showing her trying out a dress in front of her class before an evening performance for all the parents is on its own a reason to watch the film.) So, she’s not happy when his wife spoils their plans for a romantic getaway by booking a donkey-trekking holiday for the family. Not content with staying at home, Antoinette decides to follow the family only to find herself (literally) saddled with an unruly donkey. The premise of the film notwithstanding, it’s hard not to be charmed by Caroline Vignal’s comedy and the director is not shy in foregrounding Calamy’s comic timing, whose scenes with her new non-human companion are a joy to watch.
