The colour and drama of 1960s India is the focus of this impressive documentary. In 1967, Louis Malle made a two-month trip to India to promote French cinema. He took a camera operator and a sound recordist with him and together they travelled the country. When they returned to France, Malle whittled the 30 hours of footage into a nine-part TV series that aired on French and British television. (He also made the shorter companion film Calcutta). Malle regarded it as one of the defining moments of his career. The programme attracted controversy, with the Indian government claiming it was not representative of the entire country. Today, seen in two parts, it is an essential part of Malle’s impressive body of work.
