The Woman Who Ran

The Woman Who Ran

Like Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, Song Sang-soo was one of the filmmakers to emerge from Korean cinema in the 1990s. The filmmaker’s latest is a perfect example of his easy-going understated style.

While her husband is on a business trip, Gam-hee (‘The Handmaiden’ star and Hong favourite Kim Minhee) sequentially meets three of her friends on the outskirts of Seoul. They make friendly conversation but there are different currents flowing independently of each other, both above and below the surface. On the first two occasions, Gam-hee tells roughly the same story, but by the third encounter, she begins to question the veracity of the story she is telling. Winner of the Silver bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival, director Hong’s 24th feature is a sly and engaging portrait of a relationship where not everything is clear.
