Royal Opera House: Coppelia
CURZON EXCLUSIVE
Royal Ballet 2019⁄20 Season: Coppelia
French Romantic composer Léo Delibes’ glorious music is matched by the lyricism of Ninette de Valois’ choreography in this delightful ballet.
Those familiar with E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story ‘The Sandman’, the Offenbach opera Tales of Hoffmann or Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s magisterial 1951 film adaptation will be aware of this tale of a life-size doll that comes to life. Delibes playful, witty and often luscious score is matched by de Valois’ choreography, after Lev Ivanov and Enrico Cecchetti. A euphoric combination of colour, music and dance, this production has proven one of the Royal Ballet’s most enjoyable.
